Other people’s thoughts

“Most modern freedom is at root fear. It is not so much that we are too bold to endure rules; it is rather that we are too timid to endure responsibilities.”
G.K. Chesterton

“Merely having an open mind is nothing. The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.”
G.K. Chesterton

“It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish.”  J.R.R. Tolkien

“Compassion is the most important and perhaps the only law of all humanity.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“I don’t think purity is mere innocence; I don’t think babies and idiots possess it. I take it to be something that comes either with experience or with Grace so that it can never be naïve.”
Flannery O’ Connor

“Moral principles do not depend on a majority vote. Wrong is wrong, even if everybody is wrong. Right is right, even if nobody is right.”
Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

My white wall

At birth it was filled with smiling faces
In adolescence there were more questions than answers.
More frowning faces than smiles.
More thinking faces than giggles.

In my late teens I stopped drawing and began to write.
I wrote my sadness in black,
And my joys in blue.
I wrote my indecisions in red, and my plans in green.

A decade later my wall was more black than blue.
And I had to wonder, has it been this bad?
I have missed life cos’ I was seeing only black .
Even though I had blue, I never saw them.

So now I am starting a new.
I am painting everything over.
I want to start again late as it may seem.
So my wall will reflect the truth I have come to know .

That happiness is a choice.

Death is not the end . It is rather the beginning of eternity.
Emotions are not weaknesses. They are fulcrums upon which we define our humanity.
Time is not unlimited. It is measured in the rising and setting of the sun.
Hope does not die. It lasts forever for he who so desires it.
Risk is not jumping off a bridge, hoping the water will save you. It is rather jumping off a bridge after making sure the factors that will aid your fall and cushion your landing are in place.
A drunk is not always wrong. Sometimes he says the truth that we dont want to hear.
Being alive is not about sleeping and waking. It is about having an interaction with people and environment, being felt wherever you go.
Religion is not about mosques, churches, temples or other places of worship. It is about your personal relationship with God.
Expertise is not about knowing everything. Its about knowing enough of everything to have a meaningful conversation.
Sight is beyond what the eyes see. It is more about what the mind perceives.
Care is not about provision. Its about your being present when necessary.
Books may hold the key to knowledge. But life experience holds the key to wisdom.
Patience is not always rewarding. But it is always hopeful and fulfilling.
Music is not just about sound. It is about both sound and words.
Animal pets can’t take the place of human friends. No matter the argument you put forward, they are still animals and you still need to relate with your species.
Passion can’t be subdued. It always finds a way to boil over and give excitement when needed.
It is not hard to dress well. You are always addressed as you are dressed.
The sun is not just to light your path. Its there to tell you that “another cycle has begun, make the best of it.”
Your boss is not your friend. He/she is a “slave driver” that must make returns to his/her own bosses.
No matter how bad your day is take a minute to relive your successes and victories, your good times and great times. And in them find courage and hope to attempt life again on a positive note.

What I have learnt.

Today is my reminiscing day ,so I am reposting something from my archives. I hope it does you right.

As my life continues to unfold before me, these are lessons I have learnt and keep learning. The knowledge journey for me does not end and so should yours.

Peace is not the absence of war or strife. It is the stillness of the heart in tumultuous times.
Courage is not the absence of fear it is the overriding desire not to conform to the expectations of your weaknesses.
Strength is not the size of your muscle mass. Its your ability to show your real self without masking your deficiencies.
Wisdom is no longer the result of gray . But the result of learning from experiences and making “flash cards” of the lessons so others can learn too.
Obedience is neither servitude nor acting without questioning. It is rather acting based on a conviction that you are free and so have a right to explanations when you are conflicted.
Parenting is not having children. Its being responsible enough to have children and raise them accordingly, to be your lasting legacy for good.
Marriage is not a ceremony. Its a “work in progress” that lasts a lifetime.
An adolescent is not a rebel. Rather he/she is a person constantly shouting ” I want to find me, please help”.
Success is not an event. It is everyday that you find out you have moved beyond where you were the day before.
Failure is inevitable. Except you want to return to your maker like an unwrapped gift box, you must fail so you can succeed.
The feminine gender does not mean weakness. It means a partaker in creation and a reservoir of strength beyond compare.
Tears do not come from the eyes. They come from the heart when they are genuine.
Life is short. But our ideas and actions are immortal.
Whether because of the “big bang” or creation, we are here to change this world for the better. So why not start with you.

Rock Bottom or is it?

We have all had times when we felt , “this is definitely the end” . It can happen in an aspect of our endeavour; our career, business , family relationships or other facets of our existence. It could be due to frustration, disappointments, delay, things not going according to plan and a whole lot of unpredictable life twists and turns.
And so in that moment you know for a fact you have hit rock bottom. Rock bottom is a not too good a place to be but then its not enteirely bad. This is because at the bottom, there’s nowhere else to go down to. So you have an option if you are wise and willing ; acknowledge where you are and make effort to rise again or if you are lazy and foolish, you can lie at the bottom and continue staring at the top.
After a few interactions with individuals added to my own life experiences I have come to the conclusion that the bottom is not the end rather a phase in the process of being.
Do you think all is over because you are at your lowest today? Build on what is available to you , use the rocks at the bottom to build your way back to the top.
Never give up, never surrender your vision and never believe it is over until your creator calls you.

Life and its Layers.

At certain points in your life when, you just stop and look back; its always amazing what you find. You see the parts that led to victory and the despair that followed a loss. These things that make us are things we tend to forget when all is “rosy”.  I am at such a point in my life and as am looking back I am seeing all the things that contributed to my being me. And for that I say thank you.

For the failures and disappointments that I have had, probably without them I would have been too proud and “self centric”.

For the frustrations and the times that my patience was stretched to the elastic limit; without them I might have easily been broken by life’s storms.

For my moments of disgrace and embarrassment; how would I have trusted in another person’s talent without them?

For the times I worked hard and didn’t get the prize; from them I learnt that  my mind’s applause is more important than the crowd’s

For the times when being patient did not get me the “fattest bone”; I learnt that your bone is as fat as you see it to be.

For my successes and achievements; without them I would have been hopeless.

For the times I thought my life’s velocity was too slow ; without that I wouldn’t have learnt that my life is not a race or a competition.

Standing on the cusp of today between yesterday and tomorrow I am happy that I am where I need to be today.

All these and many more have become the various parts that make me who I am and I am thankful for all of them. Its because of the old mans experiences that he is considered wise. My hairs are learning enough to be termed wise when they turn gray.

Find joy in yesterday’s victories to give you courage for today’s wars.

Learning from Life

After being alive a couple of years life will teach you a few things that nothing else can teach you. These are a few that I have learnt.

Life is not fair, and it knows so stop reminding it.

Hardwork doesn’t always pay off, but it soothes the conscience.

There are so many short cuts to success but none to permanent success.

If you are a patient dog you might go “boneless”.

The strong don’t always win and the weak don’t always lose a fight.

To fail to plan is to plan to fail, reality check; don’t live a regimented life. Its frustrating to those around you who care.

The devil is not ugly and doesn’t have horns. It is the most beautiful thing you will ever see.

Nothing is ever free, you get to pay for it in ways you haven’t imagined yet.

Don’t mock a man on a losing streak. His luck can change and instantly his destiny too.

Gambling is not “addictive”, its our hope that we may beat the system thats addictive.

Be a good listener, you will hear all you need to live better from the lips of others.

Talk less in a gathering, the loquacious fellow is never taken too seriously even when he is.

Everybody lies, just don’t make lying your way of life and don’t defend yourself when caught.

Marry your friend if you can, if you can’t then make your spouse your friend.

Choice is your greatest asset , with it you can break down walls or build barricades.

Don’t expect people to always believe in you, and don’t judge them when they don’t.

Don’t wait for somebody to motivate you, motivate yourself always and you will never run out of gas.

Life is short……enjoy every bit of it……as often as you can.
