What Nobody will tell you about Life

Nobody will tell you that the path to success is riddled with failure.

Nobody will tell you that there are frustrations on the path to achieving your goal.

Nobody will tell you that you need to persevere if your prayers will be answered.

Nobody will tell you that some actions are neither white nor black but a shade of both.

Nobody will tell you that not all lies are bad, that it is moral to lie in defence of life among other things.

Nobody will tell you that God is not just a judge that He is also a lover, so He is not waiting for you to fail so He will punish you.

Nobody will tell you that merit alone may not get you promotion but personal networking most certainly will.

Nobody will tell you to learn how to speak well because a lot of the people you will meet in life will judge you on how well you communicate orally.

Nobody will tell you that alcohol can cause kidney or liver failure so you should drink in moderation.

Nobody will tell you that politics is not the devil’s profession, that its work for saints and demons alike.

Nobody will tell you that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Because the enemy you know is better than the friend you think you know.

Nobody will tell you that a new shoe hurts like hell. You see people wearing them and you think all is well.

Nobody will tell you that life is beyond parties and partying. Until you wake up to notice that your peers are employing people and you dont even have a job.

Nobody will tell you that you dont really need a college degree to be a success. A lot of successful people dont have them.

Nobody will tell you that you dont need to attend an ivy league school to be adjudged excellent. A lot of notable academics did not start from the ivy league schools.

Nobody will tell you to sleep adequately. You think sleep is a waste of time? Wait until you have a stroke.

Nobody will tell you that your youth is not the best time of your life. Your retirement is , because that is truly when you can afford not to do anything and the heavens will not fall.

Nobody will tell you that life happens only once. Because we can so focus on doing other things we think important and life will pass us by.

Nobody will tell you to learn from experience. Because its only a fool that forgets his past and disregards the lessons he can learn from it.

Nobody will tell you to play more. That all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

The Empty Chair #3

Father, in the first and second episodes of this series I have talked about quite a few issues. Issues I feel conflicted about, issues I will need clarifications on. But I cant keep talking and not give you a chance to respond, so this will be the last episode for now. Today I want to ask you about an issue that is relatively common but less talked about.

It is about prayers, the how ,the method the expectations from you and what it really means to pray well. Father, I have seen goid and serious Christians , in my own estimation, who have persevered in prayer for a particular intention; but after a very long time they still dont have answers to their prayers. From those praying for children to those praying for life partners to those praying for good jobs ,the list is endless. And I have also seen others who before they finish praying you have already answered their prayers, they are favoured right left and centre.

I know the Good book says that we dont get what we pray for because we pray amiss. My question then is , what does it mean to pray well? I have listened to different preachers and teachers and am sorry to say they dont all agree on this topic. Its like each person has a different method  that works exclusively for him/her but none that works across divides. I have read about mental prayer ,vocal prayer and everything in between and quite frankly they look and sound academic to me.

In the Scriptures you taught us to persevere in prayer, to pray without ceasing. How do we achieve that Father? You assured us that when we pray in the name of Jesus , you will answer, how come you are not answering these your saints?

I am convinced you do not have favourites, so I want to know what am doing wrong in communicating with you. Over the years I have presented some very specific intentions to you, but got no answer. It was as if you shut your eyes to my situation and your ears to my cries. But I know that you neither sleep nor slumber.

Is it part of perseverance to continue asking for intention A, when its being overtaken by a multitude of other intentions all streaming from the one intention that has not been answered?  (Sometimws its difficult to keep abreast of the different intwntions) Is it that you answer and I dont hear or see? Or you answer and it is interrupted as in the case of Daniel?

Father, communication is the fulcrum upon which my relationshipbwith you rests. How do I communicate better with you? You could also do well to communicate better, you could talk at certain times when a calm voice could soothe frayed nerves. You could speak when a voice is needed in the darkness to calm the frightened child.

But it seems you hold on to your “silence” so much that things go wrong. So many times I have no idea what you want and when  I ask you dont respond. It leaves me hovering on one foot waiting for an answer or sign to stabilize my standing.

Father, theres so much that I need answers and directions on, so much am conflicted about. But for now let me rest my voice, so that in the silence you can make your answers known and your message heard.

The me prayer

Lord help me to be content with being me

Help me to walk my paths and not the paths of another

Help me stick to your plans for my life

Even when I don’t know them in detail or in full

Help me Lord to stand true and not falter

Give me grace to stand with you though I stand alone

Give me grace to keep my head

Even when others are losing theirs.

Teach me the peculiarity of me

And the work that went into my crafting.

Teach me that I am like no other

And so should not desire to be like any other.

As we walk together Lord

Teach me to desire to rise as I fall

The grace to live fully for you and for no other

And be a good compass to those who seek you.

My Lord, give me the grace to forgive easily

To not mistake forgiveness with cowardice or stupidity

Give me grace to speak when I must

And to listen when I should

Teach me Lord that wining an argument does not make me right

Neither does losing one make me wrong

Teach me to be silent in the face of insult and injury; for you did as much

Teach me that speaking to correct a wrong must be borne out of love and not anger

If my talking will cause more harm than good

Then Lord let me not speak

If my defense will prolong a fight

Then let me lose the fight.

Lord I am but a man

Striving to know what is right and do what is right

I have failed and I will fail

But I know your grace will always be sufficient for me.
